Research Areas of the Computer Networks Group
The research in the Computer Networks group headed by Prof. Dr. X. Fu falls into the following four major themes:
- New architectures, protocols and services for next generation networks, including the design and evaluation of new network architectures (e.g., GONE, COPSS/ICN; EUJ GreenICN and ICN2020 projects), Internet QoS and NAT/firewall middlebox control (e.g., SIGNET, CASP/NSIS signaling), availability (SOUP), resilence (e.g., fast rerouting, multipath), congestion control (e.g., MulTCP, NF-TCP, XMP, LAMPS, DCMPTCP).
- Mobile computing systems and applications, urban computing, Internet of things, smart mobility and smart cities (EU ENABLE, MING-T, Daidalos-II, MobileCloud, COSAFE projects), which studies innovative traffic and mobility management paradigms, and the emerging mobile edge/cloud computing and vehicular network architectures and strategies.
- Cloud computing, software-defined networking and network function virtualization (EU CleanSky, MobileCloud projects). This tackles various issues in softwarized network and system environments, e.g., energy efficiency, resource allocation, pricing, scheduling, resilience and scalability.
- Big data and social computing (DAAD, Lindemann Foundation, Humboldt Foundation), which addresses the integration/fusion of heterogenous multi-dimensional data in the society (e.g., multi-sensory data in smart/urban cities, institutions, special groups) including online social media, survey data, governmental and not-for-profit reports and other socio-economic data. We apply machine/deep learning and sociological methods in understanding, profiling/characterizing, predicting behavior and where appropriate, interventing specific targeted groups in a privacy-preserving manner.
